Bates Stepping Aside as Heidtman CEO

John C. Bates, Sr., will move from his role as CEO to chairman of Heidtman Steel Products, Toledo, Ohio. President Tim Berra will add CEO duties to his title.

Under Bates’ 53 years of leadership, Heidtman Steel has grown to become the 22nd largest service center company in North America, with annual revenues of approximately $700 million. It employs 630 people. Bates was recognized as the Metal Center News Service Center Executive of the Year in 2013.

“I am proud of the innovative growth and success we have enjoyed. Given the positive market conditions and strength of our organization, we feel now is a good time to implement the succession plan we have been developing for several years,” says Bates.

Berra has been with Heidtman for 23 years, starting as account manager and working his way up through the company. He was named president in 2004.

“I have big shoes to fill in that John has been a dynamic leader, not just for Heidtman, but for the entire industry. We are fortunate that John will still be available to support us in this transition,” Berra says.

In an additional facet of the succession plan, John Bates, Jr., will increase his leadership responsibilities by assuming the positon of vice president of commercial. He will oversee sales, purchasing and resource planning.
